CFPB Credit-Card Complaint Index

Window 2025-07-012026-06-30 · Retrieved 2026-08-17 · Source: CFPB Consumer Complaint Database (public API)

Research question: how many credit-card complaints did consumers submit to the CFPB about each issuer we cover, over the most recent complete 12-month window? Every figure below was retrieved from the CFPB’s public API and carries its exact query URL as a citation. This is a volume index — it deliberately does not rank issuers, because raw counts without size denominators cannot support a fair ranking.

Methodology & data dictionary

  • complaints are consumer allegations, not verified facts
  • issuer-level, never card-level
  • raw counts lack denominators — issuer size differs; do not rank issuers by raw count
  • response metrics come from company self-reports to CFPB
  • Counts were retrieved from the CCDB5 API geo/states aggregation endpoint; the reported number for each company is the filtered aggregation doc_count (aggregations.product.doc_count), which reflects all query filters (product=Credit card, company, date_received range). The top-level hits.total in that endpoint's response is the size of the entire complaint database and must NOT be used.
  • Filter product=Credit card also includes its sub-products (General-purpose credit card or charge card; Store credit card) under the post-2023 CFPB product taxonomy.
  • Window is date_received 2025-07-01 through 2026-06-30 (12 months). Complaints are published only after the company responds or after 15 days, so very recent months can still grow slightly; as of retrieval (2026-08-17) the window end is ~7 weeks past, so counts should be substantially complete.
  • Timely-response / company-response breakdowns were NOT retrieved (not cheaply available via the aggregation endpoint used); fields intentionally omitted rather than estimated.

Inclusion: complaints with product “Credit card” (including its sub-products) received 2025-07-01 through 2026-06-30, for the four company names shown. Exclusion: all other products and companies; card-level attribution (the database does not reliably identify specific cards). Update schedule: re-retrieved when the corpus is re-verified; the retrieval date is shown above and in the dataset file. Corrections: via our contact page — corrections are recorded, not silently overwritten. Author: Credit Defense Hub Editorial Team; pending named subject-matter reviewer — we do not display an expert-review badge until a real named reviewer exists.
